Cllr. Ivan Henderson has expressed his pleasure and gratitude after being elected as the new leader of the Labour Group on Essex County Council.
Labour’s previous leader, Cllr. Julie Young, has stepped down as she is about to become the Mayor of Colchester and did not believe it to be possible to fulfil two such demanding roles.
The new Deputy Leader of the Group is Cllr Mike Danvers from Harlow.
Cllr. Ivan Henderson says
“I am very grateful to my fellow Labour councillors for placing their trust in me in the run up to the County Council elections. The inability of the Essex Tories to challenge George Osborne’s unnecessary austerity programme proves that Essex needs more Labour councillors. This year will be an important time for us to show how Labour will make a real difference to people’s lives.”
Ivan Henderson went on to praise the remarkable job done by Julie Young in holding the Conservative administration to account and challenging them over decisions ranging from Part Night Street Lighting to Meals on Wheels.
“Julie Young has been tireless and fearless in standing up for the things that make a difference to the people of Essex. Time after time she has exposed the callous disregard of the Tories to the suffering caused to ordinary people by their decisions and she has offered strong and positive leadership to the Labour Group,” continued Ivan Henderson. “She has earned the opportunity to be Mayor of her home town and she will represent the people of Colchester with dignity, strength and humour. We all wish her a very successful Mayoral year.”
