Cllr Willliam Archibald - 43 years in public life.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cllr William Archibald. Bill has tirelessly served the residents of Laindon Park & Fryerns since elected in April 1973.

During his extraordinary career in local government, Bill served as Leader of the council, Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Leader of the Opposition. A sharp, quick-witted and incredibly savvy advocate, he will be remembered most for the warmth and good humour with which he approached both his community, and his roles within the council.

Cllr Archibald will be thought of fondly as an honourable and conscientious public servant by friends and colleagues on all sides of the political divide; respected for his years of hard work and laudable record of service.

‘It's been an enormous privilege to work with Bill as a fellow Labour Councillor on Essex County Council. He was a giant of a Man who cared deeply about his constituents of Basildon.  Bill was an example to us all, he demonstrated the very best example of public service. A great listener, his timing of when to intervene in a debate was always superbly executed. We will miss Bill a great deal, especially his enduring good humour’

-Cllr Julie Young, Leader of the Labour Group.

‘Bill was a Labour Party stalwart in the truest sense of the word and it is hard to believe that we will no longer be able to rely on his wealth of knowledge and experience. The way in which Bill served his community and his county over many decades has been an example to anyone entering public life and it has been an honour to serve alongside him. Bill was one of the rare breed of politicians who only spoke when it was right to do so and when he spoke everyone listened. He brought a sense of purpose to any debate and was very supportive of his colleagues. Bill never lost sight of what really mattered and his priority was always the people he was elected to represent. Anyone seeking to become a councillor and looking for a role model could not do better than follow the example set by Bill Archibald. He will be truly missed but never forgotten.’

-Cllr Ivan Henderson, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group.

Bill passed peacefully on the morning of Wednesday the 6th March, surrounded by family and loved ones. He will be dearly missed by members of the Labour community in Basildon and across the county.
